A seasoned tax expert, former head of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) tax treaty unit, eight-time marathon runner and mother of twins, Sophie Chatel was born in Montreal and moved to the Pontiac region with her family in 2002. In September 2021, she became the first female Member of Parliament for the riding of Pontiac.

At the start of her mandate, Sophie launched For a Green and Prosperous Outaouais, an ambitious initiative aimed at reconciling economic development with environmental protection. She is also behind Kidjimaninan ("our canoe"), a unique conservation project led by the Indigenous community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg, in partnership with three RCMs, the City of Gatineau, regional elected officials and a dozen conservation organizations. This project embodies a strong commitment to protecting nature as well as truth and reconciliation.

In Parliament, Sophie has served on finance, foreign affairs and environmental committees. She also chaired the Rural Caucus, affirming her leadership and ability to mobilize stakeholders around critical issues for rural communities, such as food security, sustainable agriculture, network connectivity, support for local media, and rural economic development.

A lawyer by training, Sophie holds a law degree from the Université de Montréal, a master's degree in taxation, and a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. After working as a tax specialist in an accounting firm and a law firm, she joined the Canada Revenue Agency and then the Department of Finance as a senior tax treaty negotiator. In 2017, she joined the OECD in Paris, where she led a working group of 137 countries. Working closely with the UN, the World Bank, the IMF and the tax leaders of large multinational companies, she tackled one of the biggest challenges in international taxation: adapting the rules to the digital giants.
